Pregnancy Care in Christchurch

Is discomfort or pain spoiling your enjoyment of your pregnancy?

Testimonials

“Whilst seeing Katherine (for shoulder and back problems) I then also became pregnant which was always a slight worry for me after years of back and hip problems. However with support, guidance and advice I stretched/massaged/mobilised through my pregnancy with minimal issues due to Katherine's fantastic treatment. She was also on hand to help my body transition through the post partum period and to meet my little man! Would highly recommend Katherine for any ache, pain or concern as she honestly has worked miracles on my body. She is definitely one of the best out there! Can't thank her enough!” S.French

“Katherine is one of the best osteos I've seen, always taking a holistic view of treatment and clearly outlining to treatment plan. She's seen me through back and ankle issues as well as pregnancy and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend her. I always feel comfortable with her treatments and have had great success with managing chronic injuries.  Thank you Best wishes S.Beeston

Women's bodies are amazing.

Pregnancy is a time of great change in a woman's body, and for some this change can pose challenges in the form of back and pelvic pain. These can be frustrating and uncomfortable side effects of pregnancy and spoiling what should be a lovely time and making it difficult to perform everyday tasks.

Pain during pregnancy is caused by a combination of factors, including hormonal changes, weight gain, and changes in the center of gravity.

  • Hormonal changes: During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called relaxin. Relaxin helps to loosen the ligaments in your pelvis to prepare for childbirth. However, it can also cause the ligaments in your spine to become more relaxed, which can lead to back pain.
  • Weight gain: As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts forward, which can put more strain on your back muscles. This is especially true in the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Posture: As your baby grows, you may find yourself leaning back or arching your back to compensate for the weight in your belly. This can put additional strain on your back muscles.
  • Stress: The physical and emotional stress of pregnancy can also contribute to back pain.

How we as osteopaths can support you during your pregnancy.

Osteopaths are recognised health care practitioners and we are trained to screen for medical conditions and will tell you if you need to see another health professional such as your doctor or midwife. Osteopathy is based on the principle that the structure and function of the body are intimately related. If the structure is not balanced and healthy then the function is affected. When assessing you we will look not only at the area which is producing the symptoms but at the whole body. We will also consider contributing lifestyle factors such as work and sleeping posture, stress levels, nutrition and exercises.  When treating we use a range of techniques from gentle to deep tissue massage, Dry Needling/ acupuncture, taping and mobilisation of the joints in order to address the stress and strains on the body during pregnancy.  You may also benefit from treatment after the stresses of the birth. We will provide you with self management advice and support, and exercises where appropriate.
